Ferrar 400

From May 2025 through until July 2026 we shall be marking the 400th anniversaries (or quatercentenaries) of two very significant events in the history of Little Gidding. On 30 May 1625, Nicholas Ferrar and his cousin Arthur Woodnoth, acting as trustees for Nicholas’s widowed mother Mary Ferrar, signed a contract to buy the manor of Little Gidding, and the family moved there shortly afterwards. A year later, on 4 June 1626, which was Trinity Sunday, Nicholas was ordained a deacon in the Henry VII Chapel at Westminster Abbey by William Laud, at that time the Bishop of St Davids and subsequently Archbishop of Canterbury. 2026 also marks the 90th anniversary of the visit to Little Gidding by T S Eliot in May 1936.

Sunday 15 February 2026 Choral Evensong at Clare College, Cambridge

Nicholas Ferrar was an undergraduate, and later a fellow, of Clare College, Cambridge. The College’s 700th anniversary year coincides with the 400th anniversary of Nicholas’s ordination and this service of Choral Evensong marks his contribution to the College and the wider Church.

Saturday 16 May 2026 Annual Little Gidding Pilgrimage

The 2026 Pilgrimage will be led by the Rt Revd Dr John Inge KCVO, recently-retired Bishop of Worcester.

Before going to Worcester, Bishop John was suffragan Bishop of Huntingdon between 2003 and 2007, and before that he was a canon of Ely Cathedral. He has written about the spirituality of places in A Christian Theology of Place, and is also the author of Living Love: in Conversation with the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency.

For further details see the 2026 Pilgrimage page.

Tuesday 2 June 2026 Choral Evensong at Westminster Abbey

Nicholas Ferrar was ordained as a deacon on 4 June 1626 in Westminster Abbey. This service of Choral Evensong at the Abbey will mark the occasion.

Sunday 5 July 2025 Nineteenth Annual T S Eliot Festival

Organized jointly with the T S Eliot Society, with the participation of the T S Eliot International Summer School, and with financial support from Old Possum’s Practical Trust, this literary festival brings together scholars, poets and enthusiasts from all over the world to celebrate and learn more about the life, work, and times of T S Eliot.

This year’s Festival marks the ninetieth anniversary of T S Eliot’s vist to Little Gidding on 25 May 1936.

Further details and ticket information to follow.
