George Herbert and T S Eliot on BBC Radio 4
There are two programmes on BBC Radio 4 in the next few days which might be of interest, concerning George Herbert and T S Eliot.
On Sunday 22 February, Sunday Worship is broadcast live from Bemerton Church, in commemoration of George Herbert, whose feast day in the Church’s calendar is 27 February. George Herbert was rector of Bemerton Church in Salisbury. He was a close friend of the Ferrars and prebendary of Leighton Bromswold just down the road from Little Gidding. The service is led by Canon Judy Rees with Ronald Blythe, Vikram Seth and the Farrant Singers. Sunday Worship is on Radio 4 at 8.10am to 8.50, and available for the following week via BBC iPlayer. Those out of range of a BBC transmitter can listen on line at the Radio 4 website.
On Thursday 26 February, Melvyn Bragg’s In Our Time programme focuses on T S Eliot's poem ‘The Waste Land’ and its ambivalence to the modern world that was being forged around it. Guest speakers are Steve Connor, Fran Brearton and Lawrence Rainey. In Our Time is broadcast immediately after the 9am news on Radio 4 until 9.45, with an edited repeat at 9.30pm that evening. In Our Time is also archived permanently on the Radio 4 website.
